Fethiye on the Turquoise Coast

Fethiye on the Turquoise Coast

Located on the hillside of Mount Mendos this pretty town also sits on Turkey’s ‘Turquoise Coast’, so named because as the sun sets, its waters are the clearest turquoise shade you have ever seen. And Fethiye has more riches in store for you. Thanks to the Mediterranean climate which prevails along this coastline, you can be leisurely sipping your Turkish tea or Turkish coffee in the town and glance up and see white snow and mist on the mountains in the distance

Fethiye is located on the Lycian and Carian border and was called Telmessos in ancient times. The city life was rich and highly cultured during the Hellenistic and Roman periods and this is evident from the existing monuments and ancient ruins such as the rock-tombs, the Lycian-type sarcophagi, the fortress and the Roman Theatre.

In Fethiye you will revel in long, hot summers and short, warm, rainy winters. In fact, the temperature is around 86º - 105º F (30º - 40º C) during the summer months and usually above 50º (10º C) in the winter. So you can comfortably swim in these turquoise-colored waters for nine months of the year.

The town itself has everything you need for a rich and varied self-catering holiday. A wealth of historical and cultural sights and artifacts, the bazaar with its narrow, shady streets and tiny squares, great shopping and dining out, outstanding beaches, every kind of water sport, the best paragliding in Turkey, hidden coves and the pine-clad Taurus Mountains to explore at your leisure.

Sailing is also enormously popular in Turkey, and Fethiye has everything you need to indulge your pastime. You can charter a gullet, with or without a crew, or hop on one of the many advertised boat trips. Look out for the catacombs in the rocks which you can see whilst sailing from the harbour.

From the coastline to the mountains-pastures, Fethiye is the place where different cultures mix and life is colourful. Yörük (Nomads) and fishermen come together easily in a typical Fethiye picture. Folkloric values as folk music, folk dances, and handcrafts, local cuisine are all different from the other regions of Turkey.

All in all, Fethiye offers you a wonderful combination of ancient sights and modern conveniences. No wonder it’s a place which is much favored by those looking for a holiday villa to rent.
