Beautiful Sri Lanka

One of the most beautiful countries in the world, Sri Lanka is a great tourist destination of great variety. There are few places in the world where you can find the magic of tropical beaches, a rich and accessible culture and best of all, wonderful people without the trappings of mass tourism. The capital Sri Jayawardanapura is centered on Lake Diayawanna and lies below sea level. Barely 180km away is the lush green 2524m Piduruthalagala Mountain, the highest in Sri Lanka.

The commercial capital Colombo is home to many restaurants, clubs, discotheques, and casinos. The restaurants and clubs stay open late into the night. One stretch of Galle Road in Colombo has so many casinos that it resembles Las Vegas.

Alcohol flows very freely in Sri Lanka. While surrounding countries are mostly ‘dry’, Sri Lanka has probably the largest per capita consumption of alcohol in the whole of Asia. This is despite a ban on the sale of alcohol on Full Moon days (a religious holiday).

For a small island, Sri Lanka has many nicknames: Serendib, Ceylon, Teardrop of India, Resplendent Isle, Island of Dharma, Pearl of the Orient. This colourful collection reveals its richness and beauty, and the intensity of the affection it evokes in its visitors.

The entire island is teeming with bird life, and catching a glimpse of wildlife like elephants and leopards is not uncommon. Large parts of the country are covered in tropical forests, with hundreds of rivers flowing through them, often cascading in awesome waterfalls.
