Touring TenerifeThe joy of a holiday in a self-catering villa is the independence and the ability to escape the crowds of hotels and package tours. Tenerife is a Spanish island, and if you’d like a flavour of Spanish life, on a Spanish island, there are places away from the hotspots to enjoy a more tranquil sojourn. Take this advice from Peter Reed’s journal …
Any visit to Tenerife would be incomplete without a trip to Mount Teide. From San Miguel, the twisting road winds up through the beautiful village of Vilaflor (town of flowers) and on to the moon-like landscape around the mountain, a cable car is available for those not inclined (or able) to take to steep walk. From the top of the cable car there is a further climb to the summit—not to be undertaken in windy conditions. By the top cable car station is a little café where they serve a heart-warming drink of hot chocolate and rum—worth the trip for that alone!
Another trip not to be missed is to Masca, past Los Cristianos and Los Gigantes, on the west coast, high up into the mountains, where you will see the most spectacular scenery.
The Canary Islands or Gran Canaria, is a holiday haven. These small islands offer so much for the visitor. Tenerife is no exception. You can see a lunar moonscape in Tenerife, dazzling mountains with vibrantly coloured lakes, and cool flowing rivers. The beaches are long a varied. Some coves are protected from the typical winds that make learning to surf in Fatenia, and windsurfing competitions in Tenerife so well known.
