Water Sports in Fuerteventura Sailors, scuba divers and big game fishermen are all drawn to the clear blue Atlantic water. Whales, dolphins, marlin and turtles are all common sights. But most of all, the island is a magnet for surf lovers.
Fuerteventura has become a Mecca for windsurfers, surfers and boogyboarders especially during the autumn and winter months with the advent of the large Atlantic swells. There are perfect breaks to suit all abilities and top class surf schools for the total beginner.
Beginners and expert divers alike will enjoy the many superb dive sites. Dramatic rock formations, drop-offs, wrecks and reefs and a myriad of marine life are on display, with warm waters and exceptional visibility.
A trip to the north takes you to the spectacular sand dunes and beaches of Corralejo, where you can take a boat ride to the uninhabited island of Los Lobos or to Lanzarote, the extraordinary "Land of the Volcanoes". Glass bottom boat trips are available if you like to see marine life.
At the other end of the island you can enjoy the fabulous beaches of Jandia, go on the very popular camel safari. And of course, there are lots of opportunities for sailing, water ski, jet ski and beach volleyball. | Exploring Fuerteventura Jeeps and cross-country motorbikes are for hire here, so you can venture out by yourself, or go on an organized jeep safari. This is a great way to discover the large plains, lavascapes, volcanic mountains and unspoiled villages of the interior.
Puerto del Rio is a bustling port with many historic buildings, museums and a wealth of bars and restaurants. While visiting Fuerteventura, this is a must see.
And on the other side of the island, there's the ancient capital of Betancuria with its beautiful cathedral and an archaeological museum where you can see the prehistoric remains of the island's first settlers.
If you’ve always dreamed of riding horseback, this may be your golden opportunity. Several schools on the island offer lessons for beginners as well as rides for the experienced, with treks through the volcanic landscape and rides along the exhilarating coastline.
If you feel more comfortable on two wheels, mountain bikes are available for hire. The trails are challenging, dusty and, most of all, not crowded, and a great way to exercise and explore areas that are difficult to reach as well as the island villages. |
Entertainment in FuerteventuraThe island is relatively untouched by mass tourism and development. So, although there are bars and some discos, the nightlife isn’t as wild as on the other island resorts, and some of the beaches are deserted by the same comparison. This allows the traveler to really get away from it all, or for families to enjoy all the island’s treasures without too much hustle and bustle.
The land is fertile, and the landscape is studded with windmills. The local produce provides simple accompaniments to meals, while adding distinctive flavours. Potato lovers will love the two styles served in local eateries.
"Papas arrugadas con mojo" are little "wrinkly potatoes" with "mojo verde" (green garlic sauce) or "mojo rojo", also called "mojo picón" (a very spicy red garlic sauce). Just as popular are the "batatas" (depending on the season) con mojo, sweet potatoes with garlic sauce. The taste of the very sweet potatoes and the very hot garlic make an interesting and harmonious combination.
Both are eaten with the high quality fresh fish and seafood choices available. Typically for island fare, the locally preferred meats are kid and lamb, as well as wild rabbit. And to satisfy the sweet tooth, churros with hot chocolate are served everywhere.
Once your appetite is satisfied, relax on Fuetreventura beaches or in your holiday home and reflect on what made this holiday stand apart. Was it the boat ride out to Lanzorate? Seeing the Green Caves, feeling the constant breeze, or traversing the natural lunar landscape. Maybe it was the camel safari in Jandia. Perhaps it was surfing in Fuerteventura, or diving of its coast. Whatever it was, enjoy it. Thank you for sharing our Grand Canary Island's Fuerteventura Tourist Information Guide. |
