Beaches in Costa de Almeria

Beaches in Costa de Almeria

Almeria’s coastline travels some two hundred kilometers, with long stretches of sand and sheltered coves. The city of Almeria has a marina where you can enjoy various water sports including sailing, rowing, fishing and wind surfing. There's also a ferry terminal where you can take a trip over to North Africa.

Cabo de Gato, a national reserve, east of the city of Almeria is wild and unspoiled, a magnet for hikers, nature lovers, bird spotters and scuba divers. Its crystal clear waters hide a wealth of marine life, and the range of coastal landscape and coral on offer is arguably the most extensive and beautiful in the whole of the Mediterranean. The national park is home to exotic birds, huge lizards and brightly coloured butterflies.

This area has only one small Spanish resort, San Jose, where the beaches are sandy and gently shelving. An unmade road leads from the village to the cliff top Cabo de Gata lighthouse passing several wonderful beaches and coves where you can swim and sunbathe undisturbed.

West of the city of Almeria are the more developed resorts of Aguadulce and Roquetas de Mar offering a full range of water sports, with scuba, snorkeling and windsurfing to the forefront. Each resort boasts an eighteen hole golf course, and a full complement of bars and restaurants.

Entertainment in Costa de Almeria

Entertainment in Costa de Almeria

The Costa Almeria doesn’t sizzle, perhaps, at night, but it still does not lack in entertainment. The city of Almeria offers a very Spanish nightlife with numerous cheap tapas bars and good restaurants offering regional cuisine, with a strong emphasis on fresh fish dishes. Modestly priced mingle with the fashionable, staying open late and often with live music.

Tapas, that most social of eating styles won’t melt your credit card and will regale your palate with authentic tastes, like spicy prawns, mussels, local "chorizo" sausage and "albondigas" (meat balls in tomato sauce).

The Almeria Fair takes place during the last two weeks of August, when the city streets become a riot of music, dancing, processions, parades and bull running. Huge marquees are erected in the fairground and there's good-natured mayhem and merrymaking round-the-clock.

During the tourist summer season, the resorts of Aguadulce, Roquetas de Mar, Mojacar and Almerimar offer more “traditional” entertainment with live music, open air cafes and clubs. This is especially the case with Mojacar where you'll find a hive of activity along the beachfront at night - bingo, karaoke, cabaret shows and late night clubs. If you're pining for an Indian curry or bangers and mash this is the place to get it!

Snow Sports in Almeria

Snow Sports in Almeria

Almeria succeeds in meeting the needs of any holidaymaker, with an amazing variety of thing to do and see. A visit to Tabernas and its tourist parks (Texas Hollywood, Mini Hollywood and Western Leone) will put you on the path of Eastwood, Fonda and Bronson in their famous spaghetti western roles.

Further inland, we come to the Sierra Nevada Mountains, where conditions are ideal for skiers of all levels, beginner to off-piste experts. Snow making machines ensure the slopes stay light and powdery.

Snowboarding is growing in popularity and an on-slope half pipe is being built for boarders. Cross-country skiing, artistic skiing (ballet, jumps, moguls), telemark skiing, trekking and adventure skiing are also available.

The village of Pradollano offers a complete range of facilities: jacuzzi, squash, workout areas, sauna and indoor swimming pools. There are also shops, night clubs, pubs and bars, discotheques, a medical centre, and day-care. What more could you need?

After leaving your villa in Pradollano and having been artistic skiing and snowboarding in the Sierra Nevadas, come back the sunny beaches of San Jose in Almeria and sit down for a meal of tapas. For a day excursion head out on a ferry to Africa to visit a busy medina. It is almost hard to imagine that all of this is within your reach in one holiday, but thanks to the Costa de Almeria Tourist Information Guide you can see that it is. Travel Happy!
