Walkers, cyclists and bikers are royally treated. Throughout the region, walkers and bikers are guided over signposted networks of trails. For walkers, a network of signposted pathways crisscrosses the region, the routes colour-coded according to distance. One of the loveliest routes is the Cami de Ronda, old coastguards' and farmers' trails that hug the coastline.
Two-wheel enthusiasts are similarly treated, with long distance routes for the experienced riders. A cycletouring network of 250 km allows you to plan the day’s ride, follow the signposting and admire the landscape at a relaxed pace. Mountain bikers have more than 300 routes to choose from, differentiated by distance and altitude. | Cities in Costa Brava The coastline is studded with picturesque towns and villages that add colour and beautiful architecture to its fine sandy beaches, coves and clear water. Most have markets selling local produce, including fish, and are well endowed with cafes, restaurants and bars.
Sitges, a lovely town south of Barcelona, sits on top of a hill, between two beaches, and revels in its somewhat Bohemian reputation. The town is located in the foothills of the Garraf Massif, one of the most important nature parks on the Catalan coast. Walking, mountain biking, climbing and potholing are popular here.
Begur is a small village and is one of the main tourist attractions on the Baix Emporda. Its beaches are magnificent, but its main attraction is in its history. This is a fortified hill town, and has two watchtowers built in the 16th. and 17th. centuries used against Moor pirates.
Cadaques is a lovely tiny village, where the painter Dalà spent most of his life creating the surrealistic paintings inspired by these landscapes. Dali said this was the most beautiful village in the world. The whole village is surrounded by a Natural park (Cap de Creus) and the village itself is a natural harbor. |
