Edinburgh Tours

Edinburgh Tours

Edinburgh is a perfect blend of ancient and modern. The city is dominated by its famous castle perched high on what remains of an extinct volcano (you may doubt that status when you hear the daily cannon blast from the ramparts). The castle's attractions include the Great Hall, a great siege gun Mons Meg, and the tiny room where Mary Queen of Scots gave birth to James VI of Scotland and I of England.

Edinburgh is home to a host of other attractions. The new Museum of Scotland houses fascinating interactive displays (oldest locomotive engine, Roman treasure, a Viking skeleton). The Botanical Gardens provide a perfect place to admire the exotic flora and to stroll on a sunny afternoon. Or visit The Royal Yacht Britannia that came home to Scotland after retirement from service.

If you are intrigued by creepy spirits and ghosts, treat yourself to a tour of the haunted places in Edinburgh’s Old Town. On the other hand, if you like free spirits that are more of this world, travel to the Butterfly and Insect World and wander in an exotic rainforest while spectacularly coloured butterflies flit around you.

Set aside a day for Princes Street. This thoroughfare runs in a straight line from Waterloo Place to Shandwick Place. Along its entire length there are landmarks, monuments, statues and shops that will take you all day to negotiate. After that be ready to stroll the Royal Mile, taking you from Castle Rock the Old Town to the Palave of Holyroodhouse.

Lothian Highlights

Lothian Highlights

What visit to Scotland is complete without exploration of whisky and tartan? Afterall Scotland's whisky is so good it has its own name; Scotch. Scotland has hundreds of whiskys, each with its own distinct taste, created through the use of barley, water, yeast and peat. In Edinburgh you can learn all about whisky and see how it is made at the Scottish Whisky Heritage Centre, which offers an interactive display.

A short drive from the city takes you to Glenkinchie in West Lothian. This is the home of The Edinburgh Malt, and here you can see a working distillery, the making of first class malt in every respect. An exhibition of malt whisky is housed in the listed red brick building which was formerly the floor maltings. At the bar taste the Glenkinchie Single Malt which has a warm finish, dry with a smoky spiciness.

At the Clan Tartan Centre, Leith Mills, you will find a world of truly Scottish style. In the centre you can find out if your name is linked to a Scottish clan, or tartan. There is a database of 50,000 names and that will print a clan certificate to prove your ancestry. After this discovery of your roots, you can seal it with a drink of one or more of the over 100 malts to be found in the Spirit of Scotland Whisky Shop. By this time you may also be in the mood to spend some of that holiday allowance in the gift shop.

So, you see, a visit to Scotland is likely to be a “spiritual” experience in many different forms, and, on a more serious note, you might take a bus ride to the Rosslyn Chapel, now a destination of worldwide notoriety. This ancient chapel, built in 1446, is steeped in symbolism, mysticism and references to the Knights of the Templar, Freemasonry and the pagan "Green Man".

What an amazing place! Discover where the Scottish kings lived by exploring Linlithgow Palace. Cruise along on the Bo'ness and Kinneil Railway pulled by a steam engine. Golf courses in Lothian are among the greatest. Choose from links or inland courses. Glenkinchie Distillery tours are excellent too! Then find yourself in the capital of Scotland. Edinburgh cycle tours are a wonderful way to see the sights of this truly unique city. Stroll down Princes Street and wander the Royal Mile to Castle Rock and Old Town. Sit down, and get to know the local scene in Edinburgh. Lothian Tourist Information Guide bids you safe and wonderful travels in Scotland!
