Holiday in Gozo

Festivals of Gozo

Festivals of Gozo

The island is studded with beautifully adorned chapels and churches. Devoted parishioners have donated precious objects to enhance the splendour of the gilded and marbled interiors where the local patron saint is celebrated.

Saints are celebrated each year with a “festa”. Holidaymakers can marvel at the displays of decorations and lights put on by each village. Villages compete as to who puts on the most splendid show – all the more fun for visitors. Decorations, lights, brass bands, parades and merrymaking, fireworks; even horse and donkey races are traditional, leading up to the culminating Sunday procession with the saint’s statue held shoulder high through the village.

Even with the fun and celebration of the festas, religion and folklore play a strong role in the island’s daily life, and you may find yourself under the watchful eye of a statue of a saint or the Virgin as you stretch lazily on a sun kissed sandy beach.

Visitors during February can enjoy the islands’ most colourful celebration, Carnival. This time honoured festival is marked by brightly coloured floats, gaudy costumes and masks, while dance companies of all ages and sexes parade the streets of the town and the main villages throughout all the five days.

Gozo is heaven on earth for sun lovers. This small island is blessed with gorgeous beaches, safe bathing in crystal clear water, and a variety of opportunities for water sports.

There is also a pleasing variety in the beaches themselves, from the larger Ir-Ramla, il-Hamra, Xlendi and Marsalforn, to the smaller more intimate San Blas, Hondoq and ir-Rummien. Some beaches, such as San Blas, are isolated, while others, such as Xlendi, a fishing village, are populated with a promenade, bars and restaurants on the seafront, and narrow streets to explore.

A statue of St. Andrew, patron saint of fishermen, watches over the activities of locals and holidaymakers in Xlendi, while a statue dedicated to Our Lady of Hope, stands vigil in the middle of the beach at Ramla l-Hamra.

Several locations offer excellent diving opportunities for all levels of expertise. Dwejra is among the best dive-sites of the Mediterranean and undoubtedly the best the Maltese Islands offer, with deep water, dramatic rock formations and a wide variety of fish. Mgarr ix-Xini has sheer cliffs and caves rising from a pebbly beach. This secluded spot is a popular site for swimming and diving.
