Visiting Sardinia

Visiting Sardinia

The coastline is magnificent perhaps, but its beauty is matched by the island’s interior. An ideal way to explore it is aboard the Trenino Verde (Little Green Train), a vintage steam locomotive that puffs its way through forests, over bridges and through tunnels into some of the island's most scenic mountain areas.

Nuraghe – This strange name comes from the Nuragic people who arrived in Sardinia around 1500 BC. They covered the island with circular fortified structures, and some 7,000 of these monuments remain today, to the fascination of visitor and native alike.

A boat ride to Neptune's Grotto, a deep marine cave in the sheer cliffs at Capo Caccia, reveals dramatically lit, fantastic stalagmites and stalactites. If you decide to go down to the cave on foot, wear comfortable shoes, as you have to climb down 650 steps to the entrance.

History and art lovers will also not be disappointed. The Citadel of Museums complex in Cagliari houses the National Archaeological Museum, the National Picture Gallery, the Cardu Siamese Museum and a collection of anatomical waxes by Florentine sculptor, Clemente Susini. And a short ferry ride takes you to Caprera and the house of the exiled revolutionary, Giuseppe Garibaldi.

“Over 11,000 years ago there existed an island nation populated by a noble and powerful race. The people of this land possessed great wealth thanks to the natural resources found throughout their island. The island was a center for trade and commerce. The rulers of this land held sway over the people and land of their own island and well into Europe and Africa. This was the island of Atlantis.”

Powerful stuff! And now scholars are actually wondering if these words apply to Sardinia. Whatever the truth of the matter, Sardinia reflects all of those qualities, in terms of its history, its treasures and the warmth of its people.

Mysterious and isolated, Sardinia reflects the customs of its Phoenician, Greek, Arab, Spanish, and French invaders in the local language, customs, and cuisine. The mountainous inland terrain is home to wild animals (boar, mountain goat, hare, and more) which are transformed into succulent pasta sauces, stews, and roasts. Lamb, the island's favorite meat, is often cooked in the company of wild fennel, and sheep's milk cheese appears at nearly every Sardinian meal.

This land with rich soil and sun also produces wines that reflect the distinctive character of the island and its landscape, offering vintages with fabulous bouquet and explosive taste.
