 Cuisine of LimousinThe region is among the least populated in France, and is known for its peaceful, unspoiled countryside, dramatic landscapes and breathtaking views and lots of water everywhere.
Poor soil quality prevents the region from producing much in the way of wine. Limousin’s contribution to that great French tradition is the manufacture of barrels in which wines are aged. The exception is Branceilles, with small production recently revived.
Unusual for France, this region does not have a strong reputation for gastronomic specialties However, the raw materials for good food are abundant. Foie gras, chestnuts, Limousin beef, veal, lamb, delicious mushrooms and fruit are all available. A notable addition to the table is violet mustard.
Last but not least, savour the Limousin “piece de resistance”, Clafoutis aux Cerises, otherwise known as cherry pie. No ordinary cherry pie, this one is loaded with butter and cream and laced with kirsch.
Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne, also known as the Riviera Limousine, is a small town in the south of Correze. The beginning of summer is marked by the Strawberry festival (La Fete de la Fraise).
