The 2006 World Cup of Golf, which is scheduled to take place from December 4 to 10, will be held at the prestigious Sandy Lane Resort in the west coast parish of St James.
World renowned for its luxurious five star hotel, villas and championship golf courses, the all-inclusive Sandy Lane Resort is where golf legend Tiger Woods exchanged vows with Swedish model Elin Nordegren in October, 2004.
Although the World Cup of Golf was first held in 1953, it was only in 2000 that it became part of the World Golf Championships. This is the first time that Barbados will host the World Cup of Golf and only the third time that it will be hosted by a Caribbean nation.
The Sandy Lane Country Club Course: The host course will be the Country Club Course, one of Sandy Lane’s three golf courses. At 7060 yards, par 74.7, the 18-hole Country Club Course was designed by Tom Fazio, one of the world’s leading golf course architects. Golfers are spellbound by the breathtaking views of the sea and the lush tropical landscape that this beautiful but challenging golf course offers.
Sandy Lane’s other courses are the 18-hole Green Monkey Golf Course and the 9-hole Old Nine. Sandy Lane offers golfers a wide range of amenities, including a professional PGA caddy service, locker rooms with private lounge rooms, Par View GPS system, a pro shop, as well as the famous Sandy Lane Clubhouse.
The 2006 World Cup will be sponsored by the Barbados Tourism Authority, the entity responsible for the marketing of our tourism product. Twenty-four countries will participate in this year’s World Cup and this event will be on broadcast to more than 200 million viewers in over 140 countries worldwide.
