Barbados is the most easterly island of the Caribbean region and is located 168km away from the Caribbean island chain and north east of Venezuela. It is 34km long and 23km wide at its widest part.
Climate & seasons: Barbados has a tropical marine type climate and is cooled by the tradewinds. The mean annual temperature is about 26° C (79° F). It is also one of the most water scarce nations in the world. Since it is a tropical country, there are only two seasons, namely the rainy season and the dry season. The rainy reason runs from June to November and is often termed the hurricane season. During this time, there is the risk of the island being affected by tropical waves, tropical depressions and even storms or hurricanes.
Flora: There are many different species of trees and flowers on the island. Some of the oldest trees to be found on the island include, the Bearded Fig tree, pictured above, Barbadian mahogany, cabbage palm, and sandbox. Many of these trees can still be found in Welchman Hall Gully and on several plantation areas.
Even though there are not many forests left on the island, there are still a few areas of greenery especially in the hilly parishes of St Andrew and St Joseph, the parish of St Philip and parts of St John. Other great places to see lots of great flora are: Andromeda Botanical Garden, Welchman Hall Gully and the National Flower Forest.
Fauna: There are several animals peculiar to Barbados, including the Barbados black belly sheep, the Barbados green monkey and the large red-footed Barbados tortoise. Birds include hummingbirds, sparrows, and pigeons, among others. A great place to see a lot of animals is to visit the Barbados Wildlife Reserve.
